Introduction to statistical methods and experimental and survey design for biologists.
Topics include: descriptive statistics; hypothesis testing; analysis of frequency distributions; ANOVA designs; correlation and regression techniques; non-parametric methods; introduction to multivariate methods; use of appropriate computer software packages for biological data management, analysis, and graphical presentation; experimental and survey design for biologists and ecologists.
Learning Objectives:
- to develop skills in selecting and applying appropriate analytical methods to biological and ecological data;
- to familiarise students with appropriate data management, analytical, and graphical software;
- to develop skills in the design, execution and reporting of biological and ecological experiments and survey programs.
Assessment by one three-hour examination (54%); at least one and up to three experimental or survey assignments (number can be chosen by the individual student) (36%); tutorial and workshop performance (10%).
