Principles of Biochemistry

Prerequisites: CH1000 or (CH1001 CH1002) (BM1000 or BZ1020 strongly recommended)

30 lectures, 4 tutorials, 50 hours practicals. First semester.

Staff: Assoc. Professor D Yellowlees, Professor J Burnell, Dr J Hermans, Dr S Vasudevan.

This subject is designed to provide both biological and biomedical scientists with the foundations of biochemistry including the functional components of living cells and the basic metabolic strategies adopted by living cells for the generation of energy and the synthesis of cellular components.

Learning Objectives:

  1. the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids found in living organisms;
  2. the role of enzymes in biochemistry;
  3. the basic pathways of carbohydrate and lipid catabolism and their role in energy production in living cells.

Assessment by one three-hour examination (70%); practical class attendance and written laboratory assignments (30%).
