Marine Invertebrate Biology

26 lectures, 33 hours practicals, 6 hours tutorials, 8 hours field work. Second semester.

Staff: Ms G Brodie, Dr J Collins.

Subject will extend basic invertebrate knowledge into those groups that have a significant representation and diversity in the marine environment. Field techniques for identifying difficult groups will be reviewed. Both larval and adult stages will be studied through an integrated series of lectures, practicals and field trips.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to give a thorough training in the taxonomic and functional morphological diversity of marine invertebrates;
  2. increase the field ability of students, particularly observational and recording expertise;
  3. develop subject specific library and information retrieval skills.

Assessment by a three-hour examination (50%); practical/field book (40%); tutorials (10%).
