Introductory Geographical Information Systems

The fundamentals of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are explored in three sections reflecting the origins and functionality of GIS.
- automated cartography, develops the most basic GIS functions;
- spatial databases, introduces the concepts of spatial data structure and attribute storage and query;
- analysis and modelling, introduces spatial and process models in the GIS environment.
Learning Objectives:
- have an overview of Geographic Information Processing;
- have a working knowledge of the basic principles of cartography;
- be able to use a GIS to produce a map and begin to create spatial databases;
- be able to apply the above to a wide range of disciplines.
Assessment by on-course work (60%); final examination (40%).
