Advanced Database Management

Prerequisites: CO3811 or CP1500 or CP2500 or CP3010

39 lectures, 26 tutorials. First semester.

Review of relational, hierarchical and network models; normalisation; recovery and concurrency; security and integrity; query optimisation; deductive and distributed database systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the issues involved in the operation and use of database management systems (DBMS);
  2. design and implement a database and understand the various tasks which can aid in the design process including normalisation and Entity-Relationship diagrams;
  3. understand the issues involved in the operation of a DBMS including query processing, security, integrity, recovery and concurrency;
  4. understand the network, hierarchical and relational models and have an understanding of different DBMS architectures including deductive databases and distributed databases.

Assessment in this subject involves significant on-course assessment including assignments and tests and an examination at the end of the semester. The full details of the assessment are handed out to students in the class in the first week of the semester in which the subject is offered and posted on the Web.
