Aquatic Microbial Pathobiology

30 lectures, 8 tutorials, 36 hours practicals. Second semester.

Students who do not meet the prerequisite may consult with the Head of School to ascertain whether they are eligible to enrol for the subject.

Normal anatomy and histology of aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates from a disease perspective; responses to disease; description of important infectious diseases of aquatic animals and control; case studies with an aquaculture bias; establishment of piscine cell lines.

Learning Objectives:

  1. introduce students to the major aquatic diseases in Australia;
  2. demonstrate the role quarantine plays in controlling aquatic disease;
  3. teach the students the diagnostic approach to disease control;
  4. introduce the students to the various methods of pathogen isolation and culture used when investigating fish kills;
  5. introduce students to research.

Assessment by examination (65%); project/mini thesis (35%).
