Plants of Inshore and Ocean Waters

Prerequisites: BT1020 ZL1001 (BZ1020 or BZ1030 recommended)
24 lectures, 36 hours practicals. Second semester.

The examination of the phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic algal, seagrass and mangrove communities and their interactions with the physical and chemical environment.
Learning Objectives:
- to teach techniques of sampling, identifying and analysing microscopic planktonic organisms;
- provide an awareness and understanding of the diversity of plankton and plant life in the oceans and the biology, ecology and economic significance of these organisms;
- to impress upon the student the fundamental significance of the plankton and other marine plants as the foundation of the economy of estuarine and marine ecosystems and the nursery for most of its species.
Assessment by series of laboratory reports (40%); written examination (60%).
