Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods

The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to the statistics and approaches commonly used in the analysis of quantitative data generated by social and behavioural research. The emphasis will not be on the statistics in isolation, but on the context of research as undertaken in the study of human individuals and society. Measures of association and inferential statistics will be the basis of the main topics, with a focus on the fundamentals that underlie the appropriate use and understanding of these analytical tools.
Learning Objectives:
- understand the foundations of measurement and inference in social research;
- acquire skills in the application of elementary inferential techniques for data analysis;
- gain additional practical experience in conducting, analysing and interpreting research.
Assessment by written assignment (25%); practical work (25%); final examination (50%).
