Ecology and Impact Assessment in Mangrove Ecosystems

26 lectures, 6 tutorials, 6 hours practicals, 2 days field work/field project. Second semester.

The subject covers four major areas in Tropical Estuarine Systems: botanical aspects of tropical estuaries; physical and geochemical environment in estuaries; biological properties and components; and physiological adaptations and tolerances. Emphasis will be based on the biological aspects of tropical estuaries, especially the ichthyofauna, and the physiological aspects of coping with this variable environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge of the patterns and processes occurring within tropical estuaries;
  2. critically evaluate previously published research in the field of tropical estuarine ecology;
  3. present written work in a scientific format.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); tutorials and colloquium (20%); assignments (40%).
