26 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals, 8 hours field work. Second semester.
Available to undergraduate students who have the appropriate prerequisites of biometry and/or statistics.

Overview of the study of tropical marine ecology. Introduction to natural and anthropogenic processes that influence marine communities. Methods used to describe and assess marine environment. Emphasis on rigorous description, monitoring, impact assessment, experimentation and collection and handling of data. Introduction to role of ecologists in environmental management.
Learning Objectives:
- understanding some of the practical applications of marine ecology;
- design of ecological sampling and experiments;
- collection, handling and analysis of ecological data;
- understanding the role of ecologists in environmental management.
Assessment by two laboratory exercises (20%); on-course test (10%); field report (15%); a three-hour examination (55%).
