Introduction to statistical methods and experimental and survey design for biologists.

Topics include: descriptive statistics; hypothesis testing; analysis of frequency distributions; ANOVA designs; correlation and regression techniques; non-parametric methods; circular statistics; categorisation of biological data; structures in biological data; introduction to multivariate methods; use of appropriate computer software packages for biological data management, analysis and graphical presentation; experimental and survey design for biologists and ecologists.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop skills in selecting and applying appropriate analytical methods to biological and ecological data;
  2. to familiarise students with appropriate data management, analytical, and graphical software;
  3. to develop skills in the design, execution and reporting of biological and ecological experiments and survey programs.

Assessment by one mid-semester test (20%); at least one and up to four experimental or survey assignments, tutorial and workshop performance (10% each to maximum 40%); one three-hour examination (residual 40-70%).
