Ecology and Impact Assessment in Mangrove Ecosystems

26 lectures, 6 tutorials, 6 hours practicals, 2 days field work/field project. Second semester. Students will be required to attend lectures and practical classes in MB3220.

The subject covers four major areas in Tropical Estuarine Systems: botanical aspects of tropical estuaries; physical and geochemical environment in estuaries; biological properties and components; and physiological adaptations and tolerances. Emphasis will be based on the biological aspects of tropical estuaries, especially ichthyofauna and the physiological aspects of coping with this variable environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge of the patterns and processes occurring within tropical estuaries;
  2. critically evaluate previously published research in the field of tropical estuarine ecology;
  3. present written work in a scientific format.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); tutorials and colloquium (30%); assignments (30%).
