GENERAL

1. ENTITLEMENT TO ATTEND

A student of the University shall be entitled to attend any lecture with the permission of the lecturer.

2.1 APPLICATION OF REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates must comply with the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards listed in this Course and Subject Handbook and specific degree, diploma or certificate Award Requirements.

2.2 In exceptional circumstances the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, where appropriate in consultation with the relevant Head of School, may dispense with or amend any requirements of or prescription by the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards, Faculty Award Requirements and specific degree, diploma or certificate Award Requirements. Any major dispensation of the requirements should be reported to the faculty.

2.3 The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, where appropriate in consultation with the appropriate Head of School, may permit a candidate to graduate with fewer than the stipulated credit points of study for an Award offered in the faculty.

3. ENROLMENT IN AWARDS

A person who holds an award listed in General Requirements 1.1 and 1.2 may not be a candidate for that award in the same discipline.

4.1 ADVANCED STANDING

Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain advanced standing as detailed in the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and associated procedures.

4.2 Candidates are advised that degree specific Award Requirements may specify advanced standing provisions unique to that degree.

4.3 Candidates are advised that such advanced standing obtained may be subject to cancellation as specified within degree specific Award Requirements.

5.1 THE GRADE OF PASS CONCEDED

The grade of Pass Conceded may be recommended by the School directly on the basis of the particular examination. This grade may also be awarded by the faculty following consideration of the candidate’s overall result for the year.

5.2 A candidate who is granted the grade of Pass Conceded in a subject shall be deemed to have passed the subject and shall be credited with the appropriate credit points, but may not enrol for a more advanced subject in any discipline requiring the first as a prerequisite except with the approval of the appropriate Head of School.

5.3 The number of credit points that may be credited at Pass Conceded level shall not exceed a total as determined from time to time by the faculty.

5.4 A candidate awarded the grade of Pass Conceded may apply to the Head of the School concerned for permission to attempt to convert that grade to a Pass grade. Such re-examination will not be counted towards aggregate credit points work load for an academic year.

5.5 All applications under Requirement 5.4 must be approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

6.1 NON-DEGREE STUDENTS

A person who is not proceeding to a degree may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School and on completing the subject shall be entitled to receive an official statement to that effect on application to the Registrar.

6.2 A person who has not qualified for Ordinary or Alternative Entry Admission may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School in the terms of Requirement 6.1, but may enrol for subjects in more than one School only with the approval of the faculty. Subjects completed by such a student may not be credited towards a degree except by permission of the faculty.

7. SAVING CLAUSE

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in these Requirements, the faculty may in any case in which it may deem it appropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend any condition of or prescription by these Requirements. Any such action by the faculty shall be recorded for the purposes of an annual review.

8. EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES

In exceptional circumstances and with faculty permission a candidate may be permitted to graduate with less than the minimum stipulated credit points of study for an award offered by the faculty.

BACHELOR OF ARTS

1. To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 72 credit points in accordance with these Requirements.

2. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study and the normal maximum time for completion of the degree is 10 years.

3. Study plans must include:

• 3.1 at least one level 1 subject (three credit points) from four of the following subject prefixes: AN, AR, CI, CU, CY, EL, FR, GR, HI, IT, JA, JN, PL, PY, SY or WS, to a total of 12 credit points; and

• 3.2 at least one subject (three credit points) of Indigenous Australian studies, either SS1010 Australian People: Indigenous and Anthropological Perspectives, or a subject prefixed IA.

4. A major is an approved sequence of at least 27 credit points in a field of study, as listed in Undergraduate Courses and Majors. Study plans in the Bachelor of Arts must include one major and may include two, of which one must be in a field taught within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

5. The minimum total of 72 credit points comprising the degree shall include:

• 5.1 at least 42 credit points at levels 2 and 3, of which at least 18 must be at level 3;

• 5.2 no more than 15 credit points of study outside the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, except for subjects specified under a major.

6. A candidate may not enrol in any subject at level 2 or level 3 until 12 level 1 credit points have been completed, except with the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH HONOURS

1. The degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours may be undertaken, with the approval of the relevant Head of School, in any of the schools listed in the schedule immediately following these requirements. The fields of study in which honours may be undertaken are listed under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

2. With the approval of the relevant Head(s) of School(s) a joint honours degree may be undertaken in more than one field of study.

3. A candidate for the honours degree:

• 3.1 shall have qualified in this or another University for a Bachelor of Arts in a relevant major; or

• 3.2 shall have qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent to 3.1; and

• 3.3 shall have satisfied the requirements of the school(s) in which honours is to be undertaken that the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an honours degree has been attained.

4. Except with the approval of the Faculty, on the advice of the relevant Head(s) of School(s), enrolment in the honours degree shall follow on directly from the pass degree and, normally, no later than five years following completion of the pass degree.

5. Candidates for honours who have graduated with a pass degree from another university or more than five years ago may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the Head of School recommends as a condition of entry to honours.

6. The requirements for the honours degree normally shall comprise 24 credit points of study that shall include a research thesis and honours level coursework. Other prescribed work must be approved by the Faculty.

7. The requirements for the honours degree shall normally be completed by full-time candidates in one academic year and by part-time candidates in two academic years.

8. Except with the approval of the Faculty, a candidate shall not be permitted to present more than once for final examination in the same honours field(s) of study.

Schedule

Schools in which the Bachelor of Arts with Honours may be undertaken:

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF BUSINESS

1. AWARD REQUIREMENTS

A candidate for the pass degree shall follow an approved course of study as specified in the program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 96 credit points.

2. SUBJECTS

Subjects as outlined in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors will be required for satisfactory completion of the degree.

3.1 PERIOD OF CANDIDATURE/COMPLETION

The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is four years full-time study or eight years part-time.

3.2 The normal maximum time for completion is eight years full-time study or 12 years part-time study.

3.3 The maximum period of absence is two years.

4.1 MAJORS

In the Bachelor of Business component of the joint degree a candidate may select a major as outlined in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

4.2 The named major is to be included on the testamur.

4.3 In the Bachelor of Arts component of the joint degree a candidate must select a major in accordance with Requirement 4 of the Bachelor of Arts Award Requirements.

5.1 SPECIAL NOTES/REQUIREMENTS

In selecting subjects for enrolment in any year the candidate shall adhere as far as possible to the order in which the subjects of the course are set out in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

5.2 A candidate who cannot take one of the compulsory subjects shown in the Schedule under Undergraduate Courses and Majors, or for whom a special case can be made, may be permitted to take an extra elective in place of one compulsory subject.

5.3 Arts credit points are normally selected in accordance with Requirements 3 and 4 from the Award Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts.

6.1 ADVANCED STANDING FOR PRIOR STUDY

Candidates for the award of the Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Business may apply for advanced standing in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and associated procedures.

6.2 Advanced standing for prior study granted towards the Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Business may only be granted for study undertaken in the previous 12 years.

7. ADMINISTRATION OF THE JOINT DEGREE

The joint degree shall be administered by the Pro-Vice-Chancellors of the Faculty of Law, Business and the Creative Arts and the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF COMMERCE

1. ADMINISTRATION OF THE DEGREE

The joint degree shall be administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law, Business and Creative Arts.

2.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE

A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 120 credit points. The requirements for the degree are normally completed in five years of full-time study.

2.2 The 120 credit points, from 2.1 above, shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

3.1 APPLICATION FOR ENROLMENT

An applicant for the joint degree may apply for candidature at the levels 1, 2 or 3.

3.2 A candidate who has previously graduated with either component of the joint degree will not be approved to enrol in the joint degree.

4.1 WITHDRAWAL FROM THE JOINT DEGREE COURSE

A candidate who has completed the requirements of the first year of the joint degree may convert to candidature for the degree of Bachelor of Laws without loss of advanced standing. (Note: Conversion after completion of any later year of the joint degree will normally entail loss of advanced standing for non-Law subjects completed beyond level 1.)

4.2 A candidate who has met the requirements of years one to three of the course of study prescribed in the Schedule shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors and who does not complete the requirements of the fourth and fifth years of the course, shall, on application to the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, be entitled to be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF LAWS WITH HONOURS IN BOTH OR EITHER DISCIPLINES

1.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE

Honours in the joint degree may be completed as:

• BA(Hons)-LLB(Hons); BA(Hons)-LLB; BA-LLB(Hons)

depending on the requirements of individual candidates.

1.2 A candidate for the honours degree shall normally pursue studies as follows:

• BA(Hons)-LLB(Hons) — six years to obtain 144 credit points;

• BA(Hons)-LLB — an additional one year to obtain 24 credit points;

• BA-LLB(Hons) — five years to obtain 120 credit points.

1.3 Candidates undertaking honours shall complete the requirements of the honours program in either or both components of the joint degree depending on the degree in which the candidate enrols. [Refer to the Degree Requirements for the LLB and/or the Degree Requirements for the BA(Hons)].

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

The joint degree shall be administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

2.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE

A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 96 credit points. The requirements for the degree are normally completed in four years of full-time study.

2.2 The 96 credit points shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule below.

The following structure may assist candidates in selecting subjects listed in the Master Schedule of Subjects for each year of the degree.

Year 1

12 credit points from the Schedule of Science Subjects at level 1;

12 credit points from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects at level 1.

Year 2

6 credit points from the Schedule of Science Subjects at level 1;

9 credit points from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects at level 2;

up to 9 credit points from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences; subjects with 6 credit points at any level and 3 credit points at level 3.

Year 3

15 credit points from the Schedule of Science Subjects at level 2;

9 credit points from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects at level 3.

Year 4

18 credit points from the Schedule of Science Subjects at level 3;

6 credit points from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects at level 3.

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH HONOURS IN BOTH OR EITHER DISCIPLINES

1.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE

Honours in the joint degree may be completed as:

BA(Hons)-BSc(Hons); BA(Hons)-BSc; BA-BSc(Hons) depending on the requirements of individual candidates.

1.2 A candidate for the honours degree shall pursue studies as follows:

BA(Hons)-BSc(Hons) — an additional two years to obtain 48 credit points;

BA(Hons)-BSc — an additional one year to obtain 24 credit points;

BA-BSc(Hons) — an additional one year to obtain 24 credit points.

1.3 Candidates undertaking honours shall complete the requirements of the joint pass degree followed by the requirements of the normal honours year in either or both disciplines depending on the degree in which the candidate enrols.

1.4 Candidates shall if completing honours in only one component of the joint degree undertake a program of study in the chosen discipline.

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK

There is a quota on entry to the Bachelor of Social Work degree course and, in addition, a quota on entry by transfer into level 4 of the joint degree may be applied, depending on the availability of appropriately qualified field education supervisors. All students must demonstrate suitability for social work before undertaking social work field education projects and placements.

The joint degree shall be administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE

A candidate for the degree shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 120 credit points. The requirements for the degree are normally completed in five years of full-time study.

3.1 CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

Candidates shall meet the requirements for the degree and in so doing shall follow the pattern of study as set out in the Schedule shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

3.2 Candidates will be required to be interviewed, in accordance with procedures approved from time to time by the faculty, to assess their suitability for social work before undertaking professional field education projects and placements.

3.3 Candidates may be required to undertake field education projects and placements in agencies outside Townsville or Cairns at their own expense.

BACHELOR OF ARTS-BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK WITH HONOURS IN BOTH OR EITHER DISCIPLINES

BACHELOR OF COMMUNITY WELFARE

There is a quota on entry to the Bachelor of Community Welfare degree and on entry by transfer into level 3 of the degree. A person who wishes to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Community Welfare may be required to demonstrate suitability for welfare work and all students must demonstrate suitability before undertaking field education projects and placement.

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF DEGREE COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 72 credit points in accordance with these Requirements. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study.

2.1 CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the program in Community Welfare shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

2.2 Candidates will be required to be interviewed, in accordance with procedures approved from time to time by the faculty, to assess their suitability for welfare work before undertaking professional field education projects and placements.

2.3 Candidates may be required to undertake field education projects and placements in agencies outside Townsville or Cairns at their own expense.

3. ADVANCED STANDING

The faculty will grant:

• for candidates holding a completed Associate Diploma in a related field of study and admitted to a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree program, a minimum advanced standing of 33% of that program;

• for candidates having completed two years of a four year Social Work degree program, and admitted to a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree, and admitted to a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree program, a minimum advanced standing of 33% of that degree program;

• for candidates transferring between three year Social (Community) Welfare degree programs, full equivalent advanced standing.

In these guidelines:

• a reference to an Associate Diploma in related field of study means as Associate Diploma program accredited by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Welfare Workers or recognised by the university granting the advanced standing;

• a reference to a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree means a degree program approved by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

In the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences:

• the granting of advanced standing is subject to University requirements for admission;

• the granting of advanced standing is subject to faculty policy concerning the minimum amount of study required at James Cook University before a qualification can be awarded;

• the faculty may accept, for the purposes of granting advanced standing, associate diplomas and degree programs in addition to those contained within the above definitions.

Candidates in the Bachelor of Community Welfare degree may apply to the Head of Social Work and Community Welfare for exemption from some of the field placement requirements on the basis of recognition of prior learning and completion of a challenge test.

BACHELOR OF COMMUNITY WELFARE WITH HONOURS

There is a quota on entry to the Bachelor of Community Welfare degree and on entry by transfer into level 3 of the degree. A person who wishes to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Community Welfare may be required to demonstrate suitability for welfare work and all students must demonstrate suitability before undertaking field education projects and placement.

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF DEGREE COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 24 credit points in accordance with these Requirements. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is one year of full-time study.

2.1 CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the program in Community Welfare — Honours, shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

2.2 Candidates will be required to be interviewed, in accordance with procedures approved from time to time by the faculty, to assess their suitability for welfare work before undertaking professional field education projects and placements.

2.3 Candidates may be required to undertake field education projects and placements in agencies outside Townsville or Cairns at their own expense.

3.1 ENTRY TO THE HONOURS DEGREE COURSE

The faculty may permit entry to the honours course by a person who holds or is eligible to hold the Bachelor of Community Welfare degree or an equivalent degree of this or another University where it is satisfied that the degree justifies candidature for honours. Normally candidates should have obtained a grade of at least Credit in level 3 community welfare subjects to the value of 12 credit points, including the grade of Distinction in at least two subjects.

3.2 The requirements for the final honours level shall normally comprise 24 credit points and normally be completed in one academic year by full-time candidates and two academic years by part-time candidates.

3.3 The requirements for the final honours level shall include, in addition to course work, a thesis or other comparable prescribed work approved by the faculty.

3.4 School requirements may include a provision that candidates entering after graduation from another university complete such conditions of Requirement 2.1 as the Head of School may specify in addition to the Honours subjects.

4. AWARD OF THE DEGREE

In the award of honours, consideration shall be given to the candidate’s record during the course.

BACHELOR OF COMMUNITY WELFARE-BACHELOR OF ARTS

There is a quota on entry to the Bachelor of Community Welfare component of the joint degree and on entry by transfer into level 3 of the Bachelor of Community Welfare component of the joint degree. 5.2 Advanced standing for prior study granted towards the Bachelor of Community Welfare-Bachelor of Business may only be granted for study undertaken in the previous 10 years.

These courses provide a qualification that leads to registration as a teacher in Queensland.

1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A candidate for the pass degree shall follow a course of study as detailed in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 96 credit points. The normal time for completion of the pass degree is four years full-time study whilst the maximum period of candidature is 10 years. A candidate for the honours degree shall follow a course of study as detailed in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 99 credit points. The normal time for completion of the degree is four and one half years full-time study whilst the maximum period of candidature is 10 years.

• 2.3 for intending middle school teachers candidates must pass all prescribed education subjects and, unless otherwise specified, in a Secondary Area of Teaching to Year 10 (SAT10) listed in Subject Schedule 1, pass at least six credit points at level 1 and at least six credit points at level 2, and not more than 18 credit points of other discipline subjects at level 1;

• 2.4 for intending secondary teachers candidates must pass all prescribed education subjects and, unless otherwise specified, in a Secondary Area of Teaching to Year 10 (SAT10) listed in Subject Schedule 1, pass at least six credit points at level 1 and at least six credit points at level 2, and in a Secondary Area of Teaching to Year 12 (SAT12) listed in Subject Schedule 1 pass at least six credit points at level 1, at least nine credit points at level 2 and at least nine credit points at level 3;

• 2.5 not more than three credit points from other discipline subjects may be credited to the degree at Pass Conceded level unless authorised by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the faculty.

3.1 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE DEGREE

All candidates enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Education or the Bachelor of Education with Honours without previous approved teacher education shall be required to undertake professional experience as prescribed by the faculty.

3.2 Where a course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements, students may be required to undertake such placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled at their own expense.

3.3 Candidates may be required to be interviewed, in acordance with procedures approved from time to time by the faculty, to assess their suitability to undertake, or to continue in, a professional or clinical placement.

3.4 These courses include a prescribed professional or clinical placement(s) which may involve contact with young people. Students enrolled in these courses are therefore subject to Clause 11.3 of the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards, which relates to the Suitability to Work with Children Card.

3.5 Candidates should advise the Director of Professional Experience of any potential conflict of interest with regard to their practicums.

3.6 Candidates must pass the professional experience component of their course. Students who receive an unsatisfactory grade will be (i) excluded from the course or (ii) required to repeat the subject. Unsatisfactory performance in a repeat practicum will result in exclusion from the course.

3.7 Candidates who do not complete the required number of days of a professional experience subject or a professional component of a subject, without the approval of the Director of Professional Experience, will be deemed to have failed the subject.

4. CONCURRENT STUDIES

Candidates wishing to do concurrent studies in disciplines allowed under Clause 2.3, but not offered at this University, must be interviewed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and receive prior written approval to enrol concurrently as external students at another university acceptable to the faculty. Candidates will be granted advanced status for these studies upon their successful completion. Normally, the credit allowed shall not exceed 15 credit points.

5.1 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF EDUCATION WITH HONOURS

The degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours may be taken with honours in Education. Except as provided in Clause 10 of these requirements, a candidate for this degree shall normally enrol initially for the degree of Bachelor of Education and may, subject to satisfactory performance in level 1 and level 2 Education studies, be permitted to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours upon application to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

5.2 Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours may apply to transfer their enrolment to the degree of Bachelor of Education, on conditions to be determined by the faculty.

5.3 There shall be no re-examination for the thesis for the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours.

6. ENROLMENT FOR HONOURS DEGREE FOR EDUCATION GRADUATES

A person who holds the degree of Bachelor of Education, or has qualifications deemed by the faculty to be equivalent, may enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours if the faculty is satisfied that the standard and nature of the applicant’s previous academic achievements are appropriate. Such a candidate shall undertake such subjects and other work as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor designates; and the faculty shall prescribe for the candidate a minimum and a maximum period of candidature.

7. ENROLMENT FOR BACHELOR OF EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS UPGRADING THEIR QUALIFICATION FROM THREE TO FOUR YEARS

A person intending to enrol shall normally have obtained a three year Diploma of Teaching that includes a Pass in professional experience which is approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences. Experienced teachers who do not meet the above requirements may be permitted by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor to enrol and be required to complete such subjects and other work as may be prescribed in addition to completing the requirements specified below.

8.1 ADVANCED STANDING

Candidates for the Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Education with Honours may apply to obtain advanced standing for previous study and recognised prior learning, as detailed in the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and relevant procedures of the faculty.

8.2 Three year trained teachers who enrol to complete the Bachelor of Education (Professional Development) major of the degree will be given up to 72 credit points of advanced standing.

8.3 The maximum advanced standing allowable for professional development courses within the degree is three credit points except where one course is judged to be larger in size than one faculty subject.

8.4 Advanced standing will be granted for professional development courses smaller than a faculty subject. However, no credit will be given for courses smaller than two credit points, or equivalent.

8.5 Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) may apply where a teacher education student can clearly demonstrate outcomes relevant to a specific professional experience component of a Bachelor of Education program. If these outcomes can be demonstrated, the preservice teacher will be granted advanced standing for a part of the requisite days of the professional experience requirement. Demonstration of attainment of outcomes may be in the form of professional experience reports from other institutions and/or statements of teaching or related service.

8.6 In the three Professional Development major a candidate who accrues one year of full-time (or equivalent) professional experience acceptable to the faculty before completing the requirements of the degree, may be granted advanced standing of six credit points.

9. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF BACHELOR OF EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

To qualify for the award a candidate shall successfully complete 24 credit points according to a pattern indicated under Undergraduate Courses and Majors. There are three patterns:

• 9.1 Bachelor of Education Professional Development for teachers upgrading their qualification from three to four years provides a general program of study suitable for teachers working in early childhood education, primary education, middle schooling or secondary education.

• 9.2 Bachelor of Education Professional Development Special Education for teachers upgrading their qualification from three to four years provides a program of study which specialises in teaching students with special needs.

• 9.3 Bachelor of Education Professional Development with Honours for teachers upgrading their qualification from three to four years provides a program of study which specialises in educational research. Candidates in the Honours program must pass ED5190:03 Introduction to Educational Research with a Credit or better to be able to continue in this program.

Subject Schedule 1

1 Focus Studies

1 Bachelor of Education candidates study both core education subjects, listed in the course structure as Professional Studies, and Focus Studies, listed as other Discipline Studies, Secondary Area of Teaching Year 10 (SAT10), Secondary Area of Teaching Year 12 (SAT12) and Education Focus Studies. Each major within the Bachelor of Education has different requirements regarding Focus Studies (see Table 1 for details). Under the first three columns candidates choose any level 1, 2 or 3 non-education subjects, under column four they choose any level 4 education subject and under column five they choose any subject of any discipline at any level.

1 Focus Studies are groups of subjects organised under a particular theme. They provide candidates with an opportunity to specialise in a particular area, either to develop a personal interest or to maximise employment prospects. Candidates in the Bachelor of Education are encouraged to broaden their general education in ways that complement their qualification. For example, candidates in the early childhood and primary majors who do not have a relevant year 11/12 background in a particular curriculum area are strongly encouraged to enrol in pre-curriculum studies.

1 Secondary Areas of Teaching to Year 10 (SAT10) and Secondary Areas of Teaching to Year 12 (SAT12)

1 SAT10

1 In the Bachelor of Education for intending middle school teachers candidates study one SAT10. In the Bachelor of Education for intending secondary teachers, candidates normally study one SAT10 (eg Mathematics) and one SAT12 (eg Physics which incorporates a SAT10, namely science). However, some candidates might choose to study one SAT10 (eg Science) and two SAT12’s (eg Chemistry and Earth Science). There are 10 SAT10 Secondary Curriculum Studies. Eight are Key Learning Areas (KLAs) namely: Arts; English; Health and Physical Education; Languages; Mathematics, Science; Social Science and Technologies and one non-KLA: Business and Commerce. Normally a SAT10 consists of four subjects: two 3 credit point subjects at level 1 and two 3 credit point subjects at level 2 plus the relevant SAT10 Secondary Curriculum Study.

1 SAT12

1 Similarly normally a SAT12 consists of eight subjects: two 3 credit point subjects at level 1, three 3 credit point subjects at level 2 and three 3 credit point subjects at level 3 plus the relevant SAT10 Secondary Curriculum Study and the relevant SAT12 Secondary Curriculum Study. Exceptions occur because certain areas require different assortments of level 1 and level 2 subjects (eg Science 21). these exceptions are clearly identified below*.

1 Vocational Education

1 Vocational Education is a tenth area. It stands outside the SAT10 framework and is only available in Townsville. Candidates who wish to study in this area are referred to the Bachelor of Education for intending vocational education secondary teachers. Their Secondary Curriculum Study subject is ED4294:03 Choices, Transitions and Careers. Discipline subjects relevant to vocational education are listed with the SAT12 disciplines below in italics. Candidates in the vocational education program receive 24 credit point advanced standing for their industry qualification and work experience, six credit point advanced standing for a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104).

Bachelor of Education-Bachelor of Languages (Primary 123 credit points); or Primary Education with Honours (126 credit points); or Secondary Education (123 credit points); or Secondary Education with Honours (126 credit points).

Most schedules referred to in these award requirements are outlined in the approved courses shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors for this faculty. Schedules for the Sport and Exercise Science joint degrees are outlined in the approved courses shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors for the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences.

2. ADMINISTRATION OF THE DEGREES

The joint degrees shall be administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences except where otherwise specified.

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR A JOINT DEGREE WITH THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION

Restriction on entry applies to most joint degrees depending on whether a student is preparing for secondary or primary teaching.

4. A candidate for a joint degree with the Bachelor of Education shall follow a course of study as specified in the approved course shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors such that:

• 4.1 intending secondary school teachers (Years 8-12) must normally complete at least nine credit points at level 3 in the Secondary Area of Teaching to Year 12 and six credit points at level 2 in the Secondary Area of Teaching to Year 12 selected from those listed in Subject Schedule 1 on page 36. Particular joint degrees have additional requirements;

• 4.2 the candidate shall complete all practicum subjects in their teaching areas;

• 4.3 not more than three credit points at Pass Conceded level in non-education subjects may be credited to the degree;

• 4.4 the candidate shall obtain the minimum number of points specified in the approved program.

Additional requirements for some joint degrees are outlined in following sections.

5.1 PERIOD OF CANDIDATURE

Candidates for the joint pass degrees with Bachelor of Education shall, unless requirement 7 has been applied in their cases, normally pursue their studies for a minimum of four and one half years.

5.2 The maximum period of candidature for the joint pass degrees with Bachelor of Education shall be 12 years, provided that in special circumstances the faculty may grant an extension of that period.

6. FIELD AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE DEGREE

Candidates should refer to the Bachelor of Education degree requirements 3.1 to 3.7, page 35, which apply to these joint degrees.

7. ADVANCED STATUS AND ADVANCED STANDING FOR OTHER STUDIES

A candidate for a joint degree with Bachelor of Education may be granted advanced status within the appropriate degree upon conditions determined by the faculty. Normally, the advanced standing allowed shall not exceed half the total credit points required for the appropriate degree.

8. ENROLMENT STATUS

A candidate for a joint degree with the Bachelor of Education shall be designated by the faculty as a full-time candidate or a part-time candidate. The designation of full-time or part-time candidature shall be made after an assessment of the extent of the candidate’s commitments other than those related to their course of studies. Except under exceptional circumstances approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, no full-time candidate will enrol for more than the equivalent of 15 credit points in a teaching period. In the case of a part-time candidate, the maximum number of credit points of advanced standing for which enrolment will be permitted in any one year shall be determined by the faculty.

9. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT IN THE JOINT DEGREES WITH BACHELOR OF EDUCATION

The examination for the joint degrees with Bachelor of Education shall be by passing or by obtaining under requirement 7 advanced standing for passes in such assignments, exercises and written papers and by completing such other requirements, as may be approved and prescribed by the appropriate school responsible for examining the various subjects in which the candidate is enrolled.

10. AWARD OF A JOINT DEGREE WITH BACHELOR OF EDUCATION DEGREE

Candidates who have fulfilled the conditions of requirement 4 and have complied with all Statutes and other requirements applicable to them may be awarded a joint degree with the Bachelor of Education in conjunction with the other appropriate faculty.

11. TRANSFER FROM A JOINT DEGREE COURSE

A candidate who has not fulfilled all the requirements for a joint degree course may, on application to the faculty concerned, transfer to one of the degree courses and become subject to the requirements for that degree course.

12. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION- BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH HONOURS DEGREE

Additional requirements for this joint degree include:

• 12.1 Honours within the degree may be taken in those disciplines in Arts that are listed in the Schedule shown under Bachelor of Education-Bachelor of Arts with Honours in the Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

• 12.2 An applicant for enrolment for the degree shall:

  • 12.2.1 nominate a discipline from those in the Schedule on page 36 as the discipline in which honours are to be undertaken;

  • 12.2.2 have attained six level 1 credit points in that discipline with a grade of Credit or higher;

  • 12.2.3 have passed the level 1 education subjects required by the Bachelor of Education degree; and

  • 12.2.4 have obtained six level 1 credit points in another discipline listed in Subject Schedule 1 on page 36.

• 12.3 Candidates who are enrolled for the degree shall normally pursue their approved course of study for a period of not less than five years, including the first year of undergraduate study.

• 12.4 Except with the approval of the faculty, a candidate shall not be permitted to present more than once for final examination in the same honours discipline or disciplines.

13. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION- BACHELOR OF LANGUAGES DEGREE

Additional requirements for this joint degree include:

• 13.1 Candidates other than those granted advanced status by way of requirement 7 shall normally pursue full-time studies for a minimum period of five years.

14. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION- BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

Additional requirements for this joint degree include:

• 14.1 The joint degree shall be administered by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

• 14.2 Normally a candidate for the joint degree will complete 18 credit points of level 1 subjects from the Schedule of Science Subjects, 15 credit points of level 2 subjects from the Schedule of Science Subjects, and 18 credit points at level 3 from the Schedule of Science Subjects, and shall meet the requirements for one of the approved Bachelor of Science majors.

• 14.3 The subjects comprising the degree and the year in which they are taken will be chosen in consultation with the Associate Dean of Education and the Faculty Registrar of Science.

• 14.4 A candidate who has completed all the requirements for level 1 of the joint degree course may convert to candidature for:

  • 15.4.1 the degree of Bachelor of Education without loss of advanced standing;

  • 15.4.2 the degree of Bachelor of Science without loss of advanced standing for science subjects.

Schedule Bachelor of Education – Bachelor of Science

Candidates are required to complete the joint degree in accordance with the following minimum requirements:

Students are not required to take all credit points in a given level in a single academic year. Some level 1 credit points may be taken in year 2 or later. Students should ensure that prerequisite subjects required for entry to higher level subjects are completed in the appropriate sequence.

15. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION- BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH HONOURS

Additional requirements for this joint degree include:

• 15.1 The joint Honours degree shall be administered by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

• 15.2 Candidates for the Honours degree shall pursue studies to obtain a minimum of 132 credit points. The requirements for the degree are normally completed in five and a half years of full-time study.

• 15.3 The degree shall be available to suitably qualified applicants preparing for secondary science teaching who have satisfied the entry requirements for the appropriate School or Schools in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology necessary to proceed to the degree

• 15.4 Candidates shall complete the requirements for the joint pass degree followed by completion of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours.

BACHELOR OF EDUCATION WITH HONOURS-BACHELOR OF ARTS

A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Educational Services shall follow a course of study as specified under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

3. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

The minimum of 72 credit points shall include:

• 3.1 a minimum of nine and a maximum of 30 level 1 credit points;

• 3.2 a minimum of 15 level 2 credit points;

• 3.3 a minimum of 18 level 3 credit points.

4. SUBJECTS FROM ONE DISCIPLINE

Except with faculty permission, a candidate shall not obtain more than 48 credit points in any one discipline.

BACHELOR OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 72 credit points in accordance with these requirements. The normal time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study and the maximum time for completion of the degree is 10 years.

2. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

Students must complete the core Indigenous Studies (IA) subjects at level 1, level 2 and level 3 and at least three Indigenous Studies (IA) optional subjects at level 1, level 2 and level 3. The remainder of subjects may be selected from the Master Schedule of Subjects.

3. The minimum total of 72 credit points must include at least 18 and not more than 30 credit points of study at level 1 and at least 18 credit points of study at level 3.

BACHELOR OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES WITH HONOURS

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 24 credit points in accordance with these requirements. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is four years of full-time study.

2. The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the program of Indigenous Studies – Honours shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

3. ENTRY TO THE HONOURS YEAR

The faculty may permit entry to the honours course by a person who holds or is eligible to hold the Bachelor of Indigenous Studies degree or an equivalent degree of this or another University where it is satisfied that the degree justifies candidature for honours. Normally candidates should have obtained a grade of at least a Credit level in level 3 of the bachelors degree, including a grade of Distinction in at least two subjects.

4. The requirements for the honours level shall normally comprise 24 credit points and generally be completed in one academic year by full-time study or two years part-time study.

5. The requirements for the final honours level shall include, in addition to coursework, a thesis or other comparable prescribed work approved by the faculty.

6. In the award of honours, consideration shall be given to the candidate’s record throughout the honours year.

BACHELOR OF JOURNALISM

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 72 credit points in accordance with these Requirements.

2. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study and the maximum time for completion of the degree is 10 years.

3. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

Students must complete the core journalism subjects and so many journalism optional subjects as are prescribed under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

4. The minimum total of 72 credit points shall include at least 18 and not more than 30 credit points of study at level 1.

5.1 Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit points in a nominated minor.

5.2 The minor shall comprise 15 credit points of study in a discipline other than Journalism and include at least 9 credit points of study at levels 2 or 3.

5.3 Students should consult an Academic Adviser for advice about sequences of study for a minor.

BACHELOR OF JOURNALISM WITH HONOURS

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF DEGREE COURSE

The degree of Bachelor of Journalism with Honours may be undertaken with the approval of the Head of School of Arts and Social Science.

2. With the approval of the relevant Head(s) of School(s) a joint honours degree may be undertaken.

3. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

A candidate for the honours degree:

• 3.1 shall have qualified in this or another University for a Bachelor of Journalism degree; or

• 3.2 shall have qualifications recognised by the faculty as equivalent to 3.1; and

• 3.3 shall have satisfied the requirements for the school(s) in which honours is to be undertaken that the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed with an honours degree has been attained.

4. Except with the approval of the faculty on the advice of the relevant Head(s) of School(s), enrolment in the honours degree shall occur no later than five years following completion of the pass degree.

5. The requirements for the honours degree normally comprise a research thesis and coursework. Other prescribed work may be approved by the faculty.

6. The requirements for honours shall normally be completed in one academic year by full-time candidates and two academic years by part-time candidates.

7. Except with the approval of the faculty, a candidate shall not be permitted to present more than once for final examination in the Bachelor of Journalism with Honours program.

BACHELOR OF JOURNALISM-BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

2.1 MAJORS

Students shall complete all core subjects for the Bachelor of Journalism.

2.2 Students shall complete at least one science major. A science major consists of an approved sequence of 27 credit points (nine subjects) in a discipline or cognate discipline, which must include 12 credit points from science level 3 subjects, with all subjects being passed at a grade of Pass or higher.

2.3 The major may be included on the testamur.

3.1 PERIOD OF CANDIDATURE/COMPLETION

The normal time for completion of the course is four years full time study or eight years part time.

3.2 The maximum time for completion is 12 years.

3.3 The maximum amount of time a student can take as leave of absence from the course is 2 years.

4.1 PASS CONCEDED

The grade of Pass Conceded may be awarded at the examiners’ meeting. This grade may also be awarded by the faculty following consideration of the student’s overall result for the year.

4.2 A candidate who is granted the grade of Pass Conceded in a subject shall be deemed to have passed the subject and shall be credited with the appropriate credit points, but may not enrol for a more advanced subject in any discipline requiring the first as a prerequisite except with the approval of the relevant Associate Dean/Faculty Registrar.

4.3 The number of credit points that may be credited at Pass Conceded level shall not exceed six for the Bachelor of Journalism-Bachelor of Science. The grade of Pass Conceded ahall not be accepted for a subject to count to a science major.

5.1 ADVANCED STANDING FOR PRIOR STUDY

Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain advanced standing for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and associated procedures.

5.2 Advanced standing for previous study granted towards the Bachelor of Journalism-Bachelor of Science may only be granted for study undertaken in the previous 12 years.

6. CANCELLATION OF CREDIT

Unless the faculty otherwise determines, credit gained for any subject shall be cancelled 12 years after the date of the examination upon which the credit is based if by then the candidate has not completed the course.

7. SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATION FOR FINAL SUBJECT TOWARDS THE DEGREE

A candidate who has failed the final subject towards the degree and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject.

8. ADMINISTRATION OF THE DEGREE

The joint degree shall be administered by the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences and the Fcaulty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology. Ownership shall rest with the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

BACHELOR OF LANGUAGES

1.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF DEGREE COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 96 credit points in accordance with these Requirements. The normal time for completion of the degree is four years of full-time study.

1.2 Candidates shall undertake a full-time academic year (two teaching periods or equivalent) of study in a country where the language of study is spoken. The faculty, on the advice of the Head of the School, must approve the overseas study program.

1.3 The study in the country from 1.2 above will normally be completed in the third or fourth year of the degree. A student studying two languages towards the degree may divide the overseas year appropriately, spending one teaching period (or equivalent) in each country.

2. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

Internal language subjects shall be chosen in accordance with the major in the relevant language as shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

BACHELOR OF LANGUAGES WITH HONOURS

1. ENTRY TO THE DEGREE

The faculty may permit the enrolment in the Honours degree of a person who holds the degree of Bachelor of Languages of this or another University, or who holds an equivalent degree, where it is satisified that the degree justifies candidature for honours.

2. CONSTITUTION OF THE DEGREE

Subjects shall be chosen in accordance with the honours program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGY AND BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGY WITH HONOURS

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE

The Bachelor of Psychology degree is a four-year accredited sequence of study in psychology that qualifies students for conditional registration as a psychologist in the State of Queensland. After completing four years of university study, to become fully registered as a psychologist, a graduate must complete two years of supervised practice in the field or an accredited masters degree. A quota on entry may be applied. Candidates may complete a Bachelor of Psychology degree course at either a Pass or Honours level.

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE DEGREE COURSE

A candidate for the degree shall follow an approved course of study as specified in the program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 96 credit points. This shall include the specified core subjects and elective subjects.

3.1 ADDITIONAL COMPLETION CRITERIA - ENTRY TO YEAR 4

A candidate enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Psychology may only progess to the fourth year of the degree if that candidate has obtained a minimum of 72 credit points by successful completion of the level 1, 2 and 3 subjects prescribed in the Bachelor of Psychology schedule.

3.2 A candidate enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Psychology may be invited by the Head of the School to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Psychology with Honours if that candidate has obtained a minimum of 72 credit points by successful completion of the level 1, 2 and 3 subjects prescribed in Bachelor of Psychology requirement 2, and provided that the candidate has obtained a minimum of a Credit average (65%) across PY2103, PY2107 and a minimum of a Distinction average (75%) across all compulsory level 3 subjects, including PY3101.

3.3 The faculty may permit the enrolment in year 4 of the Bachelor of Psychology of a person who holds a three year sequence of study in Psychology from this or another University, where it is satisfied that the degree justifies candidature in accordance with requirements 3.1 or 3.2. Candidates entering after graduation shall complete such conditions of requirement 2 as the Head of the School may specify.

4. PERIOD OF CANDIDATURE

The normal time for completion of the course is four years full-time or eight years part-time.

5. The maximum time for completion is eight years.

6. The maximum amount of time a student can take as leave of absence from the course is one year.

7. PASS CONCEDED

The grade of Pass Conceded will be accepted.

• 7.1 The grade of Pass Conceded may be awarded at the examiners meeting. The grade may be awarded by the faculty following consideration of the students overall results for the teaching period.

• 7.2 A candidate who is granted the grade of Pass Conceded in a subject shall be deemed to have passed the subject and shall be credited with the appropriate credit points but may not enrol for a more advanced subject in any discipline requiring the first as a prerequisite except with the approval of the relevant Associate Dean/Faculty Registrar.

• 7.3 The number of credit points that may be credited at Pass Conceded level shall not exceed three for the Bachelor of Psychology.

8. ADVANCED STANDING FOR PRIOR STUDY

Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain advanced standing for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and associated procedures.

9. Advanced standing for previous study towards the Bachelor of Psychology may be granted only for study undertaken in the previous 10 years.

10. CANCELLATION OF CREDIT

Unless the faculty otherwise determines, advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 10 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if by then the candidate has not completed the course.

1. To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 72 credit points in accordance with these Requirements.

2. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study and the normal maximum time for completion of the degree is 10 years.

3. Study plans must include:

• 3.1 at least one level 1 subject (three credit points) from four of the following subject prefixes: AN, AR, CY, EV, PL, PY, SY or WS, to a total of 12 credit points; and

• 3.2 at least one subject (three credit points) of Indigenous Australian studies, either SS1010 Australian People: Indigenous and Anthropological Perspectives, or a subject prefixed IA.

4. A major is an approved sequence of at least 27 credit points in a field of study, as listed in Undergraduate Courses and Majors. Study plans in the Bachelor of Social Science must include two majors, of which one must be in a field taught within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

2. With the approval of the relevant Head(s) of School(s), a joint honours degree may be undertaken in more than one field of study.

3. A candidate for the honours degree:

• 3.1 shall have qualified at this or another university for a Bachelor of Social Science in a relevant major;

• 3.2 shall have qualifications recognised by the faculty as equivalent; and

• 3.3 shall have satisfied the requirements of the school(s) in which honours is to be undertaken that the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an honours degree has been attained.

4. Except with the approval of the faculty, on the advice of the relevant Head(s) of School(s), enrolment in the honours degree shall follow on directly from the pass degree and, normally, no longer than five years following completion of the pass degree.

6. The requirements for the honours degree normally shall comprise 24 credit points of study that shall include a research thesis and honours level coursework. Other prescribed work must be approved by the faculty.

3.1 ENTRY TO THE FINAL HONOURS LEVEL

A candidate enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work may apply to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work with Honours if that person has obtained a minimum of 72 credit points by successful completion of the level 1, 2 and 3 subjects as prescribed, provided that the grade of at least Credit has been obtained in four level 2 or level 3 social work subjects including the grade of Distinction in at least two of these subjects.

3.2 The faculty may permit entry to the Honours degree by a person who holds the Bachelor of Social Work degree of this or another University, or who holds an equivalent degree, where it is satisfied that the degree justifies candidature for Honours. Candidates so entering shall complete the conditions of Requirement 2.1 as the Head of School may specify.

4. TERMINATION OF CANDIDATURE

A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Social Work with Honours who terminates candidature for the degree may receive advanced standing towards the degree of Bachelor of Social Work for any subject or subjects completed.

5.1 AWARD OF THE DEGREE

In the award of Honours under requirement 3.1 above, consideration shall be given to the candidate’s record in levels 3 and 4.

5.2 In the award of Honours under requirement 3.2 above, consideration shall be given to the candidate’s record in the honours year.

6. ADVANCED STANDING

The faculty will grant:

• for candidates holding a completed Associate Diploma in a related field of study and admitted to a four year Social Work degree program, a minimum advanced standing of 25% of that program;

• for candidates having completed two years of a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree program, or holding a completed three year Social (Community) Welfare degree, and admitted to four year Social Work degree program, advanced standing will be granted at a minimum of 25%, and normally in the range of 25%- 50% of that degree program;

• for candidates having completed two years of a four year Social Work degree program and admitted to a three year Social (Community) Welfare degree program, a minimum advanced standing of 33% of that degree program;

• for candidates transferring between four year Social Work degree programs full equivalent advanced standing.

In these guidelines:

• a reference to an Associate Diploma in related field of study means as Associate Diploma program accredited by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Welfare Workers or recognised by the university granting the advanced standing;

• a reference to a four year Social Work degree means a degree program approved by the Australian Association of Social Workers.

In the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences:

• the granting of advanced standing is subject to University requirements for admission;

• the granting of advanced standing is subject to faculty policy concerning the minimum amount of study required at James Cook University before a qualification can be awarded;

• the faculty may accept, for the purposes of granting advanced standing, associate diplomas and degree programs in addition to those contained within the above definitions.

It should be noted that the Australian Association of Social Workers does not permit advanced standing to be given for field education undertaken in non-social work programs.

BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK (GRADUATE ENTRY)

A person may apply to enrol for the Bachelor of Social Work (Graduate Entry) if that person:

• 1.1 has completed an appropriate three or four year degree as determined by the Head of School; or

• 1.2 has qualifications recognised by the faculty as equivalent to Requirement 1.1.

2. GRADUATE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATURE IN BSW (HONOURS)

A person may apply to enrol for gradaute entry in the Bachelor of Social Work with Honours if that person:

• 2.1 has completed in their first degree the equivalent of all of the subjects in List A of the Schedule, shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors; and

• 2.2 has achieved a GPA of at least a Credit in their previous degree.

3. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE DEGREE COURSE

To qualify for the degree a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minimum total value of 48 credit points as outlined in the applicable schedule.

3.2 The normal period of candidature shall be four teaching periods of full-time study or eight teaching periods of part-time study.

3.3 Candidates will be required to be interviewed in accordance with procedures approved from time to time by the faculty to assess their suitability for social work before undertaking professional Field Education Placements.

3.4 Candidates may be required to undertake Field Education Placements in agencies outside Townsville, Cairns, Mackay or Singapore (as appopriate) at their own expense.

3.5 This course includes a prescribed professional or clinical placement(s) which may involve contact with young people. Students enrolled in this course are therefore subject to Clause 11.3 of the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards, which relates to the Suitability to Work with Children card.

4. TERMINATION OF CANDIDATURE

To qualify for the advanced diploma a candidate must normally have completed subjects of a minium total value of 48 credit points, 24 credit points at levels 1 and 2 subjects with some level 3 credit points permitted where a specific employment requirement is being pursued. The normal minimum time for completion of the course is two years.

2.1 CONSTITUTION OF THE COURSE

A candidate must successfully complete core IA subjects at levels 1 and 2.

2.2 The minimum total of 48 credit points shall include:

• a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 30 level 1 credit points;

• a minimum of 18 level 2 credit points;

• a maximum of 12 level 3 credit points.

3. SUBJECTS

A candidate must complete level 1 and level 2 core IA subjects and at least 24 credit points of Indigenous Studies (IA) subjects from the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects. The number of level 1 credit points which may be obtained in any one discipline shall not exceed six except with faculty permission and except with regard to level 1 subjects in human services, in which case up to 12 credit points may be obtained.

3.2 Except with faculty permission a candidate shall not obtain more than 30 credit points in any one of the disciplines listed in Schedule A below.

4. SUBJECTS FROM FACULTY OF ARTS, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Except with faculty permission a candidate shall obtain from subjects listed in the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects a total of at least 30 credit points including:

• at least 12 credit points from level 1 subjects;

• at least 9 credit points from level 2 subjects.

5. SUBJECTS FROM OTHER FACULTIES

A candidate may obtain up to 15 credit points from subjects outside of the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects or non-Social Science subjects in the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects.

6. EXIT STATUS

Advanced Diplomates who subsequently enrol with advanced standing in a Bachelor degree will be required to surrender the Advanced Diploma before the degree is conferred.

1. AWARD REQUIREMENTS

A candidate for the diploma shall follow an approved course of study to obtain a minimum of 24 credit points.

2. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a candidate who has successfully completed the diploma may use subjects within the Diploma of Arts for advanced standing towards degree programs offered within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences.

3. Candidates who articulate from the Diploma of Arts into a degree program within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences must relinquish their existing dilpoma prior to graduating with a degree from the faculty.

4. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION

A candidate for the diploma shall follow an approved course of study as specified in the program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 24 credit points. This shall include the specified core subjects and elective subjects.

5. PERIOD OF CANDIDATURE/COMPLETION

The normal time for completion of the course is one year full-time study or two years part-time.

6. The maximum time for completion is five years.

7. The maximum amount of time a student can take as leave of absence from the course is one year.

8. PASS CONCEDED

A grade of Pass (P) or higher must be obtained in all core subjects.

9. ADVANCED STANDING FOR PRIOR STUDY

Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain advanced standing for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy and associated procedures.

10. Advanced standing for previous study granted towards the Diploma of Arts may only be granted for study undertaken in the previous four years.

11. CANCELLATION OF ADVANCED STANDING

Unless the faculty otherwise determines, advanced standing granted for any subject shall be cancelled 10 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if by then the candidate has not completed the course.

12. SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATION FOR FINAL SUBJECT TOWARDS THE DIPLOMA

Supplementary examination will be offered in line with current faculty policy and guidelines.

13. ADMINISTRATION OF THE DIPLOMA

BACHELOR OF ARTS AND BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH HONOURS

The Bachelor of Arts degree provides students with an opportunity to complete a coherent course of study specialising in at least one area of knowledge. They are also able to combine study in several areas to obtain unique combinations of skills and background knowledge for maximum flexibility in preparation for the workforce. Students may complete a major in a single discipline, in two disciplines (a double major) or general course of study.

The structure of the degree ensures that graduates of the Bachelor of Arts have skills in oral and written communication. They are skilled researchers able to seek out information, critically analyse and evaluate evidence and plan solutions to problems in a logical and organised manner. Graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree requires the completion of 72 credit points of academic credit which can be achieved by a full-time student in three years or over a longer period for part-time students. Credit points are accrued through the completion of subjects with each subject being valued at a specified number of credit points. Most subjects are worth 3 credit points of academic credit but some at level 2 and 3 are worth 3 or 6 credit points or more. The credit point value of a subject indicates the work load it requires of the student: the higher the credit point value, the greater the workload. Students enrolled full-time normally complete 4 subjects per teaching period or 12 credit points of academic credit.

Students should select a major in the Bachelor of Arts. A major requires completion of 27 credit points of academic credit in a specified field.

Students may complete more than 27 credit points of academic credit in their selected major if they wish. No more than 15 credit points of study may be selected from subjects outside of the Schedule of Arts and Social Sciences Subjects except for subjects that form part of a specified major.

HONOURS

Honours in the Bachelor of Arts comprises a separate fourth year of study in the major in which the student completes a thesis and honours subjects. An honours year is available to selected students in the majors offered in the BA as specified.

Students who have completed a double major may undertake joint honours.
