Mechanical and Mechatronic Design

Prerequisites: ME2525 ME3511 ME3512 ME3514 ME3515

39 lectures, 39 hours workshops. Second semester.

Available to level 3 mechanical engineering students.

Design in accordance with standards. Legal and ethical machine safety requirements. Optimisation and modelling. Detailed investigation of selected design problems in a number of areas of mechanical engineering. Topics will be drawn from the following areas: Acoustics, dynamics, machine element design, solid mechanics and the design of thermal and fluid machinery. Some selected students may undertake collaborative projects with industry.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to the use of standards in design;
  2. to promote student awareness of legal and ethical machine safety requirements;
  3. to reinforce subject material from a number of areas of mechanical engineering and to develop design skills specific to these areas.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
