Heat and Mass Transfer

Townsville

Prerequisites: MA2000 ME2512

39 lectures, 18 tutorials, 21 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to level 3 chemical and mechanical engineering students.

Fourier’s Law. Conduction heat transfer, steady state and transient applied to one, two and three dimensional systems. Fick’s Law. Mass diffusion techniques.

Heat and mass convection, similarity with momentum transfer, natural convection, heat exchangers and heat and mass exchange devices.

Radiation heat transfer including surface properties, boiling heat transfer, evaporation and condensation, multi-mode heat transfer

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to the fundamental modes of heat and mass transfer;
  2. to extend this knowledge to common engineering exchange devices and systems;
  3. to introduce the role of material and fluid properties in determining exchange rates;
  4. to ensure that the student is able to tackle straightforward engineering transfer problems on graduation.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
