Computational Mechanics

Townsville

Prerequisites: MA2000 ME2525

39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to level 3 and level 4 mechanical engineering and mechatronics students.

Principles of concurrent engineering, solid modelling, design for manufacture and design optimisation.

Finite element modelling of mechanical systems covering static, normal mode, frequency and transient analysis. Modelling strategy including loads and boundary conditions, symmetry, Saint-Venant’s principle and constitutive laws.

Durability modelling, high cycle versus low cycle fatigue, total life estimation, crack initiation, linear elastic fracture mechanics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide students with a modern perspective on concurrent engineering;
  2. to introduce fundamental and practical concepts in finite element methods;
  3. to introduce students to concepts of design for manufacture, design optimisation and design for life.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
