39 lectures, 13 tutorials. First semester.

Staff: Mr R Kapitzke.

The subject introduces the environmental science student to the engineering profession and provides an integrated problem solving approach to sustainable development issues and to the rehabilitation of degraded environments. A project emphasis is used to illustrate the roles of engineers, scientists and managers in environmental work. A planning and design sequence for projects, design and analysis tasks, design tools, communication methods and environmental technologies are presented. Project management techniques are described. Several major case studies are included and the subject material is frequently illustrated with project examples.

Learning Objectives:

  1. outline the engineering profession and its role in society;
  2. provide an appreciation of issues that engineers are involved with;
  3. demonstrate the role of the technical expert in environmental management;
  4. introduce planning and design methods used by engineers;
  5. provide an insight into practices and problem solving approaches used by engineers;
  6. undertake case study examples to illustrate the planning and design process; and
  7. promote good inter-disciplinary communication and work practices.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); on-course assessment (60%).
