A detailed examination of a selection of Australian fiction from the last thirty years and of the changing contexts which have influenced them.
Learning Objectives:
- a detailed knowledge of each of the set texts;
- a familiarity with the critical reception of the set texts and the secondary literature surrounding them;
- an understanding of the changes in the generic boundaries of the novel in the period;
- an understanding of the influence of social, political and literary developments in the last 30 years on fiction writing;
- a sense of the progressive development of an identifiably Australian tradition of fiction.
Assessment by seminar, introduction/essay of 3,000 words each (40%); tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%).
