Sport and Exercise Psychology

This subject introduces students to sport and exercise psychology as a theoretical and applied discipline. Emphasis will be given to the role of psychological theory and research methodology in terms of understanding human experience in a sport, exercise and health context. Subject content will include the role of personality, anxiety and affect in sporting research and performance, psychometric testing of athletes and coaches, motivational states affecting performance and the social dynamics of team involvement.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand human behaviour in sport and exercise using contemporary psychological theory and established research methods;
  2. to develop skills to facilitate athletic performance through application of these theories;
  3. to encourage students to approach psychological research critically and thoughtfully.

Assessment by project report (40%); final examination (60%).
