Introduction to Psychology 1

This subject provides an introduction to the systematic study of individuals in their socio-cultural context. It focusses on the richness and diversity of shared human experience as individuals explore, come to know and interact with the world around them. Students are introduced to the pivotal concepts and seminal works in four key areas of psychology: social psychology; personality theory; life-span development; and abnormal psychology. In order to gain a comprehensive appreciation of the content and methodology of psychology as a whole, students are strongly encouraged to enrol also in PY1002.
Learning Objectives:
- an integrated introduction to the content, concepts and methods of psychology insofar as they impact on the scientific study of human behaviour in social settings;
- an appreciation of the way in which psychology might be applied to the solution of human problems;
- a preliminary grounding in the intellectual history of discipline.
Assessment by essay (20%); laboratory reports (20%); mid semester quiz (20%); final examination (40%).
