Creating Music 1B

26 lectures, 13 hours workshops, 39 hours flexible delivery. Second semester.

Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques and will undertake a study of contemporary music songwriting. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on Western wind instruments, along with further studies in the techniques of music analysis. They will develop their practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop and develop further skills in composition and recording with music technology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and anlaysis;
  2. gain an understanding of contemporary songwriting techniques and analysis;
  3. gain a knowledge of western wind instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for winds;
  4. gain a practical knowledge of advanced hardware and software systems used in music technology.

Assessment by tonal music techniques: worksheets (15%), examination (10%); orchestration worksheets (10%); songwriting: portfolio (15%); analysis technology: written analysis (10%), recorded work (15%), electronic work (10%), log book (5%); attendance/participation (10%).
