Creating Music 1A

26 lectures, 13 hours workshops, 39 hours flexible delivery. First semester.

Students will begin an ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques, techniques of 20th century composition, orchestration and arrangement for string instruments and techniques of anlaysis. They will develop their practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop and develop skills in composition and recording with music technology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and analysis;
  2. gain an understanding of 20th century composition techniques and analysis;
  3. gain a knowledge of western string instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for strings;
  4. gain a practical knowledge of the primary hardware and software systems used in music technology.

Assessment by tonal music techniques: worksheets (15%), examination (10%); orchestration worksheets (10%); 20th century composition: portfolio (15%); analysis technology: written analysis (10%), recorded work (15%), electronic work (10%), log book (5%); attendance/participation (10%).
