This subject combines a thorough revision of basic skills with a study of new and challenging material. Revision will range from phrases used when greeting people and introducing oneself to talking about one’s hobbies and field of study, dealing with numbers, prices, time expressions, making requests, extending invitations, describing one’s daily routine, etc.

Parallel to the revision, students will study episodes of a Japanese TV drama recorded from satellite broadcast. Apart from reading, writing and listening comprehension exercises associated with the revision, assignments will also contain comprehension and summary writing tasks based on this authentic material. Students will be expected to have learned approximately 150 of the most frequently used Kanji characters on completion of this subject.

Studying for this subject combines individual study and attending consultation sessions and intensive workshops. Students will complete listening, reading and writing tasks with the help of teaching material designed for individual study. Assistance with this aspect of studies is available at consultation sessions and through telephone and e-mail contact with teaching staff. Weekend workshops are dedicated to discussions, intensive conversation practice and role plays.

Assessment by oral/aural and written examinations: listening (25%); speaking (25%); reading (25%); writing (25%).
