*Recent Australian Fiction

Prerequisites: 24 units of level 3 EL subjects including EL3005 and EL3025 (Townsville); substantial achievement in 3 levels of EL subjects (Cairns)
Inadmissable Subject Combination: EL4002 EL4004

Available to students in the level 4 English Honours program. Students taking EL4005 do not enrol in EL4002.

A detailed examination of a selection of Australian fiction from the last thirty years and of the changing contexts which have influenced them.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a detailed knowledge of each of the set texts;
  2. a familiarity with the critical reception of the set texts and the secondary literature surrounding them;
  3. an understanding of the changes in the generic boundaries of “the novel” in the period;
  4. an understanding of the influence of social, political and literary developments in the last 30 years on fiction writing;
  5. a sense of the progressive development of an identifiably Australian tradition of fiction.

Assessment by seminar, introduction/essay of 3,000 words each (40%); tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%).
