Graduate BEd First Year Professional Experience

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Graduate program, who are concurrently enrolled in ED3001 (Early Childhood), ED3101 (Primary) or ED3211 (Secondary).

This subject introduces students to the developmental curriculum of professional experience within the Graduate Bachelor of Education. In schools and centres relevant to their specialist sector (Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary), students will explore what constitutes and influences teachers’ work. They will compile a portfolio of materials based on observations, data gathering, planning, teaching, and managing learning within an ethic of care. Throughout the year, students will also collaborate, co-plan and co-teach with school-based teacher educators, starting with small groups and leading to teaching whole class for whole teaching episodes.
In addition, throughout the year, students will complete 50 hours of community service which they will document in a log and submit to the Professional Experience Unit.
Learning Objectives:
- understand factors shaping teachers’ work;
- collect within a school/centre, information relating to varied approaches to theories and practices of establishing and maintaining effective learning and teaching environments;
- begin to plan, implement and manage for outcomes for all learners, within an ethic of care, and within the context of the school/centre frameworks;
- communicate effectively with a range of members of the educational community of the practicum;
- apply the above skills to the equivalent of about 30 lessons which include some focus on numeracy, literacy and effective use of technology;
- contribute to the provision of community education services.
Assessment by a written report on the student’s demonstrated competence in developing teaching skills; completed signed logs of 50 hours of community service.
