Plant Cell Biology

Prerequisites: BC2013 or BT2250

26 lectures, 36 hours practicals. First semester.

This subject will provide students with an integrated approach to how plant cells function, from the level of genes to cells. Topics addressed will include photosynthesis, respiration, the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates and plant secondary compounds, the regulation of gene expression and systems used in plant biotechnology and transformations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to the fundamental physiological, biochemical and molecular processes responsible for plant life and to integrate these processes;
  2. to demonstrate modern plant physiological, biochemical and molecular techniques in the laboratory.

Assessment by a three-hour theory examination (70%); performance in practical exercises (30%).
