Plants and the Tropical Environment
Townsville
Prerequisites: BT1020 BZ1020 (CH1000 or CH1001 CH1002 or BM1000)
26 lectures, 36 hours practicals. First semester.
Staff: Dr J Holtum.
The subject introduces the processes by which plants respond to environments where growth may be limited by light (rainforests), water (saline and arid environments), temperature or nutrients. Emphasis will be placed upon mechanisms that underlie growth and development of vascular plants and the interactions between plants and their physical environment with respect to water relations, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, plant growth hormones, plant movement and defence mechanisms.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide students with fundamental knowledge about plant function and processes required for plant life;
- to demonstrate basic physiological principles in the laboratory.
Assessment by a three-hour examination (65%); performance in written assignments and practical exercises (35%).
