News Gathering Techniques

13 hours lectures, 24 hours tutorials. Semester 2.

This is a practical subject that builds on the knowledge of information-gathering techniques developed in JN1001 . Students analyse reports on such matters as local, state and national politics; science and technology; education; health and issues relating to the arts, using both traditional sources and the Internet. The art of questioning interviewees is an integral part of the subject.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gather information effectively and ethically;
  2. to develop research and investigative skills;
  3. to learn interviewing skills;
  4. to shape information into news stories.

Assessment by regular news assignments (90%); tutorial participation (10%).
