Introduction to Journalism

An introduction to the practice of Australian journalism: the nature of news, the criteria on which it is based and the range of sources from which information can be acquired. Through practical work, the subject examines the roles and responsibilities of the journalist and the legal and ethical restraints upon one.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand the functions of the news media;
  2. to develop foundational information-gathering skills;
  3. to learn basic newswriting.

Assessment by assignments (40%); tutorial participation (10%); supervised exercises (10%); examination (40%).
