Photographic Theory and Practice 2

13 hours lectures, 39 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to Bachelor of Photography students. Students undertaking this subject must either have passed or have a concurrent enrolment in PT1510.

This subject builds on the theoretical and practical concepts introduced in PT1610 and PT1710 integrating them to further develop the fundamental principles on which photography is based. Topics to be covered include: measurement and calculation of exposure through incident and reflected readings; photographic composition and design; theory and use of camera filters; print presentation techniques including retouching and mounting; use of a copystand.

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire an understanding of the principles of 35mm black and white photography;
  2. develop an awareness of the principles of photographic composition;
  3. acquire a thorough understanding of the measurement and control of light;
  4. achieve competency in all aspects of photofinishing;
  5. continue to develop and demonstrate safe work practices;
  6. produce a folio of work representing the student’s personal artistic direction.

Assessment by three practical assignments (70%); folio of photographs (20%); journal detailing folio conception and progress (10%).
