Third Year Professional Experience

4 hours lectures, 150 hours professional experience including approximately 950 hours of James Cook University academic staff contact for the cohort. Full year. RATEP mode only, 200 hours professional experience.

Available to students who have successfully completed 40 units of BEd subjects, including 9 units in each discipline area for BEd Secondary and ED2499 and are concurrently enrolled in ED3093 (Early Childhood), ED3193 (Primary) or ED3211 (Secondary).

This subject is part of the developmental curriculum for professional experience within the BEd program. In schools and centres relevant to their specialist sector (Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary), students will complete four weeks throughout the year, with an option for rural sites. During this time, students will continue to develop skills and personal practical knowledge, and to work collaboratively with school-based teacher educators.

In addition, throughout the year, students will complete 50 hours of voluntary community service which they will document in a log and submit to the Professional Experience Unit.

Learning Objectives:

  1. the ability to plan, prepare and self-evaluate teaching short sequences of learning episodes;
  2. a developing critical knowledge base for learning and teaching;
  3. effective interactive skills with all learners;
  4. the ability to establish and manage effective learning environments appropriate to most learners;
  5. the ability to work towards developing and using appropriately a variety of assessment techniques to monitor, record and provide feedback on learners’ progress;
  6. awareness of complexities and ethics of teachers’ roles, including importance of maintaining collaborative relations with colleagues;
  7. contribute to the provision of community education services.

Assessment by school-based teacher educators who will complete a written report on the student’s demonstrated competence in developing teaching skills; completed signed log of 50 hours voluntary education community service.
