TOURISM
JCU is the only Australasian university designated as a member of the World Tourism Organisation’s Global Network of Education and Training Centres in Tourism. Tourism is located within the School of Business. The School publishes Australia’s leading international tourism journal and is a focus for tourism research in four national co-operative research centres.
The School aims to produce graduates who have the following skills and qualities: specific working skills and knowledge (e.g. familiarity with current industry and practices); professional learning skills (e.g. knowing how to approach new problems); and interpersonal skills (e.g. ability to work with others).
Postgraduate tourism studies offered in the School include Graduate Diploma of Tourism, a one year program on a full-time basis. Graduate Diploma of Tourism students will undertake individual or group industry-based projects in an area of interest, as well as completing specified subjects. Original data collection is not normally expected.
Master of Tourism by coursework, a one year program on a full year basis. Students in the Master of Tourism by coursework, general stream, will prepare a report which should be a maximum of 70-80 A4 pages, based on independent research in an area of interest in tourism as well as completing the specified subjects.
The Master of Tourism includes a general stream as well as specialisation in Ecotourism. Students in the Master of Tourism ecotourism stream will complete the specified subjects as well as undertaking a report focusing on ecotourism issues.
Additionally, there is a Master of Administration (Tourism) which is a thesis-only based research degree and a PhD by thesis program.
