13 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals, 26 hours workshops. Second semester.

The making of paper for use in the book arts and illustration arts; advanced binding techniques; the history and practice of typography; use of experimental techniques to produce type forms; computer typesetting and book design; publishing and exhibition of the artist’s book.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop an understanding of the history and contemporary developments in typography book design;
  2. to produce sample books which show evidence of an understanding of the practical techniques and skills demonstrated in this subject;
  3. to produce a journal which shows evidence of historical awareness of typography, self reflexive and critical inquiry, an understanding of technical skills and workshop practices;
  4. to produce the artist’s book which shows evidence of creative decision making, experimentation, critical inquiry and technical expertise committed to professional orientation;
  5. to develop a critical attitude in relation to the student’s own work, peers’ work, national and international artists’ book practice.

Assessment by practical projects: sample book (40%), folio of artists books, as negotiated with the lecturer (40%); critique (10%); journal (10%).
