Prerequisites: Portfolio interview

13 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals, 26 hours workshops. First semester.

Available to all students subject to portfolio interview. Students undertaking this subject are advised to contact the Subject Coordinator preferably in advance of enrolment verification regarding portfolio and/or interview requirements as there is a strict quota on this subject. Student places will be prioritised on the basis of performance in portfolio interview. To gain maximum benefit from this subject, students are strongly advised to do VA2512.

The physiology and function of the artist’s book; history of the artist’s book including contemporary developments in the artist’s book; concepts underlying the function of the artist’s book, e.g. the book as narrative, social agent or democratic multiple; basic folding, sequencing and binding techniques; book illumination using gilding/gouache/tempera and lettering techniques (including a short history of styles and technique); watercolour, drawing and rendering techniques in book arts; printmaking techniques as they relate to the book arts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop an understanding of the history and contemporary developments in the artist’s book production;
  2. to produce a bound sample book and journal which shows evidence of technical expertise and an understanding of practical techniques demonstrated in this subject;
  3. to produce the artist’s book which shows evidence of creative decision making, experimentation, critical inquiry and technical expertise committed to professional orientation;
  4. to develop a critical attitude in relation to the student’s own work, peers’ works, national and international artists’ book practice.

Assessment by practical projects: sample book (40%), folio of the artist’s book, as negotiated with the lecturer (40%); critique (10%); journal (10%).
