All That Jazz 2

Builds on the general jazz history. The subject provides a focus on the elements of jazz and improvisation (form, texture and harmony) employed by numerous artists in varying jazz styles.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a deeper appreciation of the various styles of jazz;
  2. an understanding of the manner in which jazz has developed throughout the 20th century;
  3. a knowledge of the musical tools used by artists in different jazz styles;
  4. an enhanced knowledge of jazz forms, harmony and timbre.

Assessment by mid-semester aural examination (15%); end-of-semester aural examination (35%); essay (2,500 words) (50%).

Late submission of assessment items will attract penalties unless an extension has been granted in writing by the lecturer. Work submitted by students with an attendance rate of less than 80% may not be eligible for assessment without prior written approval from the lecturer.
