This is a general subject on jazz history that covers the various styles of jazz from its origins through to the present. Recordings by key artists associated with various jazz styles are examined and jazz forms are explored and analysed.
Learning Objectives:
- an appreciation of the various styles of jazz;
- an understanding of the manner in which jazz has developed throughout the 20th century;
- a knowledge of the music of the key artists associated with each different jazz style;
- a general knowledge of jazz forms.
Assessment by mid-semester aural examination (15%); end-of-semester aural examination (35%); essay (2,500 words) (50%).
Late submission of assessment items will attract penalties unless an extension has been granted in writing by the lecturer. Work submitted by students with an attendance rate of less than 80% may not be eligible for assessment without prior written approval from the lecturer.
