Foundation Mathematical Skills

Inadmissable Subject Combination: SA in Senior Maths B, MA1020

39 lectures, 26 practice classes. First and second semester.

This subject will introduce students to the main topics of undergraduate mathematics, to enable access to MA1000 and other quantitatively based subjects. Topics will include arithmetic and calculator skills; basic algebraic skills with applications, linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; simple matrices and simultaneous equations. Introduction to differential and integral calculus with applications, trigonometry and vectors.

Learning Objectives:

  1. basic competence in mathematics;
  2. to develop some expertise in the use of mathematics to solve problems.

Assessment by written examination (50%); progress tests (40%); assignments (10%).
