Mathematical Foundations

Prerequisites: Senior Maths B (or equivalent) or permission of HoS
39 lectures, 26 hours practicals. First semester (Townsville and Cairns campus); second semester flexible delivery (Townsville campus).

Algebra including partial fractions and the binomial theorem; analytic geometry; functions and graphs; inverse functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometry; differentiation, including implicit differentiation and related rates; stationary points, curve sketching; simple integration.
Learning Objectives:
- students are expected to revise and enhance elementary skills from secondary school mathematics, with active participation in practicals to supplement the lecture presentations. The mathematical applications include simple modelling exercises in science and engineering, with ancillary computer software to assist calculation and understanding.
Assessment by coursework (tests and assignments) (30%); a three-hour examination (70%).
