Mathematical Techniques

Prerequisites: Senior Maths B (or equivalent) MA1000
Inadmissable Subject Combination: MA1002

39 lectures, 26 hours practicals. Second semester (Townsville and Cairns campus); first semester flexible delivery (Townsville campus).

MA1000 is a required corequisite subject.

Derivatives of parametric functions and inverse functions; inverse trigonometric functions; hyperbolic functions; differentials; Newton’s method; induction; convergence with simple test criteria; power series; complex numbers; numerical integration; basic integration techniques; separable and linear first order differential equations; second order differential equations with constant coefficients; matrix algebra; systems of linear equations; matrix inversion; determinants.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide the opportunity for students to consider further elementary mathematical topics. Applications include examples drawn from the chemical, biological and environmental sciences. Computer software is used to assist with associated calculations.

Assessment by coursework (tests and assignments) (30%); a three-hour examination (70%).
