Primary School Visual Arts Education

This subject is designed to further sensitise students to the visual arts as educationally essential. It will highlight the rich potential for literacy, problem-solving, expressive and creative learning in art. Effective teaching will be a focus. Students who intend teaching in early childhood, primary or secondary settings may enrol.
Learning Objectives:
- review historical discourses which impact on current principles and practices in Australian art education;
- examine the ways in which childrens drawings and development have been theorised;
- become more familiar with national and state curriculum documents which support visual arts programming;
- workshop in a variety of art media including ceramics and masks, with emphasis on management and safety for children;
- complete a short course in drawing (no previous skill level is required);
- continue to refine and articulate a personal philosophy of art education.
Assessment by practical (approx. 50%); theoretical (approx. 50%). To be selected from: constructing a program of work, drawing assignment, workshop tasks, journal and participation. Students may wish to negotiate an independent assessment piece e.g. mural work, exhibition etc.
