LOTE and TESOL: Methods and Materials

Prerequisites: ED3111

20 lectures, 20 workshops. Full year.

Available to students intending to become Primary LOTE teachers/to provide classroom support for the LOTE program and to students wishing to work in the TESOL area.

Staff: Dr M Allan.

This combined LOTE/TESOL subject reviews the theoretical bases for syllabus development and program implementation and explores the development of teaching methods and materials for LOTE and TESOL programs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. study current approaches to second language teaching, with a particular focus on task-based learning;
  2. apply the principles of communicative language teaching and task-based learning in the student’s own classroom practice (micro-teaching project);
  3. develop strategies for reflective practice (action research project).

Assessment by micro-teaching (40%); action research project (60%).
