Second Year Professional Experience

Townsville, Cairns

Prerequisites: ED1401 or ED2490 or ED2491

4 lectures, 50 hours professional experience. Second semester (on-campus students Townsville and Cairns campuses). Flexible delivery full year in RATEP mode only.

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program and who have completed ED1401 or ED2490.

This subject is part of the developmental curriculum for professional experience within the BEd program. In schools and centres relevant to their specialist sector (Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary), students will compile a portfolio of materials based on purposeful observations, data gathering, planning, teaching, and managing learning environments within an ethic of care, and where appropriate in multi-age contexts. Students will collaborate, co-plan and co-teach with school-based teacher educators, starting with small groups and leading to whole class for whole teaching episodes. By the end of the practicum, students will have taught the equivalent of not less than 16 whole lessons, with some focus on literacy, numeracy, equity, and effective use of information technology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. collect within a school/centre, information relating to varied approaches to theories and practices of establishing and maintaining effective learning and teaching environments;
  2. begin to plan, implement and manage for outcomes for all learners, within an ethic of care, and within the context of the school/centre frameworks;
  3. communicate effectively with a range of members of the educational community of the practicum;
  4. apply the above skills to the equivalent of not less than 16 lessons which include some focus on numeracy, literacy, equity and effective use of technology.

Assessment by successful satisfactory completion of the activities outlined in the Second Year Professional Experience Handbook as confirmed by signed statements from school-based teacher educators.
