Hydrogeology

Prerequisites: 12 units of level 1 Science subjects; (EA1100 or EA1300) and CH1001 recommended

26 lectures, 26 hours practicals. Second semester.

An introduction to the science of groundwater flow, including hydrologic cycle, porosity and permeability, fluid flow, fluid chemistry with implications for water resources, pollution and waste disposal, petroleum and minerals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. students will gain a preliminary understanding of the physical and chemical processes effecting water flow, quality and availability;
  2. lecture materials will be reinforced as students work through weekly practicals and a written assignment, culminating in solving a major practical project.

Assessment by a two-hour written examination (40%), in-course tests and marked practicals (30%); major practical (15%); assignment (15%).
