78 hours practicals, 5 days field work. Second semester.

Available to civil engineering students.

Design – generally three projects covering hydraulic engineering, structural engineering and systems/environmental/transportation/ geotechnical engineering. Where possible, these will be treated in an integrated way. In this subject, the designs will be more open-ended and oriented towards overall projects compared with earlier design subjects.

Field trip – students will be required to participate in an extended field trip to inspect civil engineering projects outside the Townsville area.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop skills relating to design in the areas of hydraulic, structural, and systems/ transportation/environmental/geotechnical engineering;
  2. appreciate the holistic and interdisciplinary nature of civil engineering;
  3. develop skills in the reporting of design investigations.

Assessment by on-course assessment of design practical classes and field trip reports (100%).
