Quantitative Biological Methods

Prerequisites: 12 units from subjects in Table Va or permission of HoS

30 lectures, 24 tutorials, 12 hours workshops. First semester.

Introduction to experimental and survey design; principles of ecological and biological sampling design; hypothesis generation for ecological and biological experiments; collection of biological and ecological data; manipulation and interpretation of biological and ecological data; statistical methods used in biology and ecology; production of biological and ecological reports.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop skills in the design, execution, reporting and critique of biological and ecological experiments and survey programs;
  2. to develop skills in selecting and applying appropriate analytical methods to biological and ecological data;
  3. to familiarise students with appropriate data management and analytical software for biological and ecological data sets.

Assessment by one three-hour examination (54%); experimental or survey assignments (36%); tutorial and workshop performance (10%).
