Plant Diversity: from Reef to Rainforest

33 lectures, 36 hours practicals which includes 4 tutorials. First semester.

This subject introduces students to the diversity of plants and micro-organisms found in the tropics, including aspects of their structure, reproduction, distribution, classification and evolution.
Learning Objectives:
- to gain an appreciation of the diversity of plants and micro-organisms and their evolutionary relationships;
- to gain an understanding of the structure and function of plants;
- to develop basic laboratory skills and to critically observe and interpret a range of plant materials;
- to learn how to use keys for identifying plants.
Assessment by theory examination (55%); practical examination (25%); practical book (15%); class test (5%).
