Introduction to Plant Science

33 lectures, 36 hours practicals. First semester.

This subject introduces students to the diversity of plants and micro-organisms, including aspects of their structure, reproduction, distribution, classification and evolution.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gain an appreciation of the diversity of plants and micro-organisms and their evolutionary relationships;
  2. to gain an understanding of the structure and function of plants;
  3. to develop basic laboratory skills, including the sectioning and staining of specimens;
  4. to critically observe and interpret a range of plant materials;
  5. to learn how to use keys for identifying plants.

Assessment by theory examination (55%); practical examination (25%); practical book (15%); class test (5%).
