Tropical Entomology

Available to students enrolled for the degrees of MSc (including MSc Qualifying), MAppSc, BAppSc or Graduate Diplomas.

This subject covers the phylogeny, classification and functional morphology of terrestrial arthropods, especially insects. Methodological skills needed in the evaluation of insect biodiversity will be taught. Students will be expected to develop an area of particular interest to them via a project or major literature review. Attendance at ZL3501 lectures is required.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to appreciate the diversity of terrestrial arthropods;
  2. to correctly identify and curate terrestrial arthropods;
  3. to know the variety of techniques used to collect terrestrial arthropods;
  4. to understand the evolutionary relationships between the major groups of terrestrial arthropods.

Assessment by examination, an insect collection and a research project or literature review.
