Tropical Entomology

26 lectures, 33 hours practicals, 24 hours field work. Second semester.

The ecology, systematics, structure and function of terrestrial arthropods including the insects, arachnids and myriapods.

Topics include evolution and systematics of terrestrial arthropods; structure and function of insect systems; biological control and integrated pest management; collecting, curating and identifying terrestrial arthropods.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to appreciate the diversity of terrestrial arthropods;
  2. to correctly identify and curate terrestrial arthropods;
  3. to know the variety of techniques used to collect terrestrial arthropods;
  4. to understand the theory behind biological control and integrated pest management;
  5. to understand the evolutionary relationships between the major groups of terrestrial arthropods.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination (20%); insect collection (20%); project (10%).
