Understanding Professional Helping

26 lectures, 24 hours practicals or the equivalent in mixed mode delivery. Second semester. Also offered at Mackay campus.

This subject introduces students to the world of professional practice its issues, concerns, dilemmas and possibilities. The principles of social justice are considered in relation to such practice and emphasis is given to work with individuals, groups and communities.
Learning Objectives:
- discuss critically the differences between professional and non-professional approaches to helping;
- outline the main roles and responsibilities associated with professional practice;
- articulate socially-just welfare practice approaches;
- describe, analyse and evaluate a case scenario by accessing information, assessing the situation, formulating and implementing a plan of action and evaluating what you have done.
Assessment by presentation and/or written assignment (100%).
